Marketing – a field of endeavour for which it is hard to have a good word. Most unfair really, in that no aspect of life has a mortgage on morality and none is the playground of pure devils. But feeding ‘haves’ and fleecing gullible ‘have-nots’ doesn’t attract too much interest nor respect from this songwriter’s angle.

MARKET
I’m talking about a new generation
Partners in a new kind of war
Drilling us with new explanations
Of why we need more rich and more poor
They tell you of the game played by markets
How level are the new playing fields
Everyone can have their free parking
If they make the right kind of deals
They’ll tell you it’s fair, everyone benefits
We all get our share of the big chocky cake
Look at you square, somehow you’re not convinced
Rather than share they know how to take
I’m talking about the large multi-nationals
Homogenize the people and place
Grabbing at the new and the fashionable
Lifting up your skirts and your face
Driven by their positive mantra
That losers have their fool selves to blame
Success is just a matter of banter
If the school you went to had the right name
They’ll tell you it’s fair, everyone benefits
We all get our share of the big chocky cake
Look at you square, somehow you’re not convinced
Rather than share they know how to take
I’m talking about the haves and the climbers
They say it’s what you know and not who
Full of all these empty one-liners
That make them think they’re talking with you
I’m talking about the haves and the have-nots
Talking about the haves and the have-nots
Talking about the haves and the have-nots
Talking about the haves and the have-nots
