Been Away 03:32
BEEN AWAY Been away a while now Had a long time to think about everything I lack And let me tell you I found plenty It's good to be back Been away a while now I've seen places I wouldn't want you to go Been fighting off these demons Progress was slow But when I saw the ending, I was not afraid I knew the grand illusion, my fear was of the pain An end or beginning, but surely not in vain? Been away a while now My mind, it wandered, right off track Some strange warp I've been in It's good to be back Been away a while now Living in a novel with no plot The boring central character Finds out all that he is not When you feel the power, of someone else's game You are just a problem, just another name And when the hour cometh, control must be regained And when my hour cometh, how will I stay sane?
2.
Innocent 03:17
INNOCENT I didn't do it, I swear that it's true For all my shortcomings, I'd never hurt you The last thing I'd do I didn't say it, though I said enough I could've abused you, but I'm not that rough I'm more off the cuff I heard nothing, I saw nothing I said nothing, I am innocent I heard nothing, I saw nothing I said nothing, I am innocent I didn't hear it, if I had I'd say Now I hear rumours, of your night-time play My feet set in clay I didn't even think it, my brain not in gear Faithful, unblinking, for more than a year Now I have paid dear I heard nothing, I saw nothing I said nothing, I am innocent I heard nothing, I saw nothing I said nothing, I am innocent I heard nothing, I saw nothing
3.
Missing 05:01
MISSING I hear you, but I don’t listen much I hear you, but I often lose touch Thinking back now on the times that we shared All of those pleasures could never be bad We did nothing wrong, we tried and we cared Lost the perspective on just what we had I see you, but I miss many things I see you, from the shadows you spring Remembering too, all the edges too rough The task we attempted was really too hard We did nothing wrong, the going was tough When a full house was needed, we had no cards To play, then the day came to part We played, then the house fell like cards Replayed on the strings of the heart I hear you, but I don’t listen much I hear you, but I often lose touch Memories fade, the face shows the time Passing so quickly, like ships in the night We did nothing wrong, in fact we were fine Tired of our selves we head for the light To play, then the day came to part We played, then the house fell like cards Replayed on the strings of the heart I hear you, I see you, I hear you, I see you I hear you, I see you, I hear you, I see you

GLAD I KNEW YOU I heard today that Jerry's gone An era long has faded away His jolly face though old and grey Not in the way and cannot be replaced I want it said, he did me good Misunderstood by all who were not heads He lived like hell, the wildest rider Higher than a kite with tales to tell And I was glad to know you rider, glad you showed me, rider From Dark Star into medley, St. Stephen, oh so deadly Glad to be a fighter, a smokin' tokin' rider And I'm sad to see another dead is grateful I'm sad to see another dead is grateful The Fillmore just a dream A trip or two in future He stretched across the sea And reached out through the mushroom cloud to me The skull is veiled, the rose will die We didn't fly the starship has sailed A ripple spreads, the pond remains A world has gained but our man Jerry's dead And I was glad to know you rider, glad you showed me rider From Dark Star into medley, St. Stephen, oh so deadly Glad to be a fighter, a smokin' tokin' rider And I'm sad to see another dead is grateful I'm sad to see another dead is grateful Yeah I'm sad to see another... The King is dead (another grateful dead) The King is dead (one of the faithful dead) The King is dead (another grateful dead) The King is dead (one of the faithful dead) The King is dead (another grateful dead) The King is dead (one of the faithful dead) The King is dead (another grateful dead) The King is dead (one of the faithful dead)

NEVER AN ADULT Tell me how do you feel when there's no-one near To hear your tale at the end of the day It's a hollow kind of feeling And how do you feel when your childhood dreams Are torn to pieces in every which way It sends your mind a-reeling And how do you feel when you face the fact She won't be back, the end is the worst A love that once had sparkled And how do you feel when deep brown eyes Show no surprise, you thought you'd be first Instead you wind up startled And you cry-y, cry-y, you cry without a sound You cry-y, cry-y, like a baby so helpless and down A-ll the way down You cry-y, cry-y, you cry in selfish grief You cry-y, cry-y, you cry for lost belief Cr-y, just for relief And how do you feel with an old friend gone You must go on, you thought you'd first And you think of your achievements And how do you feel, looking back - The total lack, with time now the curse You are your own impedance You cry-y, cry-y, you cry without a tear You cry-y, cry-y, like a baby your focus is near Your focus on death and on fear You die-ie, die-ie, you die without a sound You die-ie, die-ie, and one more time, you go around Like a baby, at last you go down From a baby it's all the way down

The Linemen 04:29
THE LINEMEN I am a lineman for the local shire Searching for the coming thunder storm My job is just another to be privatised I’m looking for a new line and new form, (out of form) I am a lineman for the local band The mirror and the razor are my tools Running practised eyes over pretty fans Making sure they know who makes the rules And the Wichita Lineman is still there, online The Wichita Lineman is still there, online The Wichita Lineman doesn’t know that time Passed him by, passed him by I am a lineman on a tuna boat We use the long lines of both kinds Pointing our noses into the Great Bight wind Looking for the silver streak in our minds And the Wichita Lineman is still there, online The Wichita Lineman is still there, online The Wichita Lineman doesn’t know that time Passed him by, passed him by

Summer Storm 04:01
SUMMER STORM Singing in soaking warm rain, my pain is an open field I peeled off the outer skin, found thin inner beauty there A fair sunny day and a glass of champagne then remained The anger had gone as a fierce summer storm, I refrained Reading a book in the rain, the drain full of paper cups And up in the sky the brown haze, is razed with a single swipe Of Mercedes' new blades, mirror-max shades still remain The anger is there but the clean breath of air, I refrain The wind blowing hard in my face Sleet driven sheets cross the bay Trees arc and flick back in place Blow away the words, I'm glad I never say Waiting for a tram in the rain, the sane and the less so collect Like insects at night round a flame, blame isn't easily pinned The sinner is swift with the gift of the gab he remains My anger is gone as a brief thunder storm, is contained The wind blowing hard in my face Sleet driven sheets cross the bay Trees arc and flick back in place Blow away the words The wind blowing hard in my face Sleet driven sheets cross the bay Trees arc and flick back in place Blow away the words, I'm glad I never say

Took A Shine 04:31
TOOK A SHINE At a party one night He left her talking to another guy (at a party one night) He went out walking in the moonlight (at a party one night) The other man was very keen He thought he'd get between them He took a shine to her, he took a shine to her He took a shine to her But she was not impressed ( not impressed) Later on that night They left to travel home by car (from the party that night) Stopped at a store, it wasn't far (from the party that night) The man behind the counter grinned He knew he was right in She took a shine to him, she took a shine to him She took a shine to him Slipped him her phone number (her phone number) Then the weekend came He went out drinking with the boys (when the weekend came) Lifting himself above the noise (when the weekend came) He saw his girl walk hand-in hand The store, the face, the man She took a ride with him, she took a ride with him She took a ride with him And she never returned (never returned) She never returned (never returned) And as two lovers share the shine The siren blows, it is half-time How could he miss, oblivious He missed the shine, missed the shine
9.
IT ALL FELL DOWN (Now and Then) We had a blue and I blamed it on you Then it all fell down A stupid sick row when I think of it now But it all fell down And I think of you now and then Think of you still, as a friend We shared a love but were baying for blood When it all fell down We had it wired but we seemed to grow tired Then it all fell down We’d never flirt then you suddenly hurt And it all fell down And I miss the occasional look Glancing away from your book Then the eyes went so vague, barriers raised And it all fell down Down, like the Berlin wall Foundered, on the siren’s call Now and then I feared a fall But the wall came down Now in a dream a familiar old scene As your hair fell down Calm and so warm with no sign of a storm Then the rain fell down And I think of you now and then Think of you still, as a friend We shared a love but were baying for blood When it all fell down We shared a love but were baying for blood When it all fell down We shared a love but were baying for blood When it all fell down We shared a love but were baying for blood When it all fell down
10.
THE BATTLE OF THE SISTERS She wandered alone in the courtyard She thought of her love gone afar Banished to wait, for she was just a woman The tide of our times was astir The rights of each side soon to blurr And they suffered into suffrage And the sisters carried on Utterly against the odds Still the sisters carried on Through their liberation The sisters seemed so strong But none foresaw the turncoats The shoulder pads and fur coats None believed that it could happen to them The turncoats proved better at being men Than men, at being men Better than men, at being men She wanders alone in the unit She thinks of her love on the rig Banished to wait, for she is just a woman The scream of the child flips her lid The pressure, the bills and the kid They have suffered through their suffrage Yet the sisters carry on Utterly against the odds Still the sisters carry on Through their liberation The sisters seemed so strong But none foresaw the turncoats The shoulder pads and fur coats None believed that it could happen to them The turncoats proved better at being Turncoats prove better at being Turncoats prove better at being men Than men, at being men Better, than men, at being men Better, than men, at being men Better, than men, at being men Better, than men, at being men Better, than men, at being men Better, than men, at being men

SOMETHING GOOD TO WEAR We are poor, never sure where our next meal's coming from We are poor, never sure where our next meal's coming from But never mind, I will find you something good to wear Never mind, I will find you something good to wear And you will have your hair cut in the latest style Elegant dress to match your beautiful smile Our own dreams, we won't fall apart You are a person with heart, I can follow Who is poor? I am sure, I don't need to score Who is poor, I don't need to score They are poor, never sure which of thirty shirts he should wear They are poor, never sure which of thirty skirts she should wear But never mind, you will find they look immaculate But never mind, every time, they look immaculate 'Cause they will have their fair share of the taxes they paid Super plans, neatly laid Their fair share of the illness this brings Cling to a life that has long become hollow Who is poor? I am sure, I don't need to score Who is poor, I don't need to score Who is poor, I don't need to score And never mind, I will find you something good to wear Never mind, I will find you something good to wear And you will have your hair cut in the latest style Elegant dress to match your beautiful smile Our own dreams, we won't fall apart You are a person with heart, I can follow And never mind, you will find, something good to wear

YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO HOME Tragic patience you display, will you deign to look my way I guess I should explain it, though, expect it hardly matters if you know You don't have to go home You don't have to spend another night alone (You don't have to go home) You don't have to go home We don't need to live in a mindless stone You don't have to go home Why you stay I cannot tell, should I sway you with hard-sell Instantly my prospects soared, now you've mastered looking bored Weight of silence hard to bear, you just give a vacant stare I go on rambling, you're amazed, I don't catch on 'cause I am fazed You don't have to go home You don't have to spend another night alone (You don't have to go home) You don't have to go home We don't need to live in a mindless stone You don't have to go home Irretrievably faux pas, talk was where I'd been a star Desperate for relief that's due, I couldn't say I thought you knew Slow to sink into my head, realized with loads of dread I blew my rave and so the night, you can't save me from my plight You don't have to go home You don't have to spend another night alone (You don't have to go home) You don't have to go home We don't need to live in a mindless stone You don't have to go home You don't have to go home You don't have to spend another night alone (You don't have to go home) You don't have to go home We don't need to live in a mindless stone You don't have to go home

Recurrence 04:03
RECURRENCE (SKIN & BONES) I'm in circles, running circles I'm in circles within time Endless sequence, so frustrating All is shifting and the thread is fine You can find me, by the water Near the fountain of your youth Don't deny me, if I've caught her On the mountain speaking truth You'll be waiting, ever-waiting You'll be waiting for all time I'll be searching, ever-searching Always searching for a sign Then I'll glimpse you, through the doorway Down the corridor I run In a room there, on the floor lay Your 'kerchief in a shaft of sun Take the water down the valley, to the graveyard, wash the stones Heaven help you, if you dally, they will have you skin and bones And the dream goes on, goes round and round I know my role and I have to lose The thread runs through, a soulful sound I rendezvous but the object moves away I rendezvous but the object moves away 'Cross the river, my destination I need to swim, but the current's strong Paralyzed, procrastination The moon rides high, night wears on So many times I've tried and blundered On this quest that I've begun I am frightened, crashing thunder Don't be angry if I run Take the message to our leaders, every hope depends on you We believe that you can free us, God knows we believe in you Take the water down the valley, to the graveyard, wash the stones Heaven help you, if you dally, they will have you skin and bones And the dream goes on, goes round and round I know my role and I have to lose The thread runs through, a soulful sound I rendezvous but the object moves away I rendezvous but the object moves away I rendezvous but the object moves away

Dark Haunt 03:03
DARK HAUNT I see, where you’re going to I think I know, where you’re coming from I’ve walked through passes, with snow caps all around Wondered if I would ever come down I’ve been, into outer space I’ve seen into, the calmest place I’ve fought through snow, cold, deep to the waist Wondered if I’d ever see your face And I tried so hard to find you I was buried deep On my mind – I’d lied to you Wading through a secret, I couldn’t keep I know, all my darkest haunts I’ve thrown the towel in, had lowly thoughts I don’t deserve you, somewhere high above Wonder if I’ll ever find your love And I tried so hard to find you I was buried deep On my mind – I’d lied to you Wading through a secret, I couldn’t keep
15.
Twitchy 03:23
TWITCHY Kaleshnikov, the AK47 Shotguns with an action made in heaven An auto 22, can blow a hole through you So just beware If your neighbours give you a hard time Fix them up with booby-traps and land-mines Firing squads can judge, all those clowns with drugs (Not booze or smokes) Hold off on that trigger You feel it, it makes you strong Hold on to that barrel He's grasping at straws All he has to keep him hanging on And if your woman's stepping out of line Talking of careers and work part-time A gun can do the talk, later she might sulk (And burn the toast) Hold off on that trigger You feel it, it makes you strong Hold on to that barrel He's grasping at straws All he has to keep him... Hold off on that trigger You feel it, it makes you strong Hold on to that barrel He's grasping at straws All he has to keep him hanging on Keeps him hanging on It keeps you hanging on Hanging on Keeps you hanging on Hanging on

The Spreader 02:48
THE SPREADER He was a handsome dude, with a one-track mind A piece of tail, wasn’t hard to find When the morning came, they were cast aside A minor sleight to his boundless pride She was a lonely girl, in a foreign place When the morning came, a smiling face Though cast aside, a fast joyride She couldn’t hide, she didn’t mind And some called him a sinner Most thought he must be bad This man was close to saintly The best friend that you could have And the secret’s in the eyes I see - he treats all people equally His attention comes for free, the only way he can be It was a crowded train, on a two day haul When Benares came, he’d had the call In the morning shade, not a promise made A ghost is laid, a path repaved And some called him a sinner Most thought he must be bad This man was close to saintly The best friend that you could have And some called him a sinner Most thought he must be bad This man was close to saintly The best friend that you could ever have

MORGAN’S TALE He came out to the gold-fields, from the green hills of old Wales Suffered on the journey, becalmed and withstood gales Could scarcely believe where his wish to be free would now lead Across the sea Onward past Benalla, saw the mighty Ovens flood Dug into a valley, spent his heart, his sweat and blood Who would’ve thought of old Morgan’s Wandilagong reef Beyond belief A god-fearing man of the Methodist clan He hit pay-dirt A god-fearing man who gave not a damn For the money, or a new shirt Sing now Morgan, sing to the warm wind of fate Sing now Morgan, sing to the sun, the earth, the stars Esther found it just right, and she headed back to town Settled into Brighton, where she partied from sundown She said that Morgan’s rich vein was the first of a few She said she knew Morgan stayed a bushman, the lights he loved were stars A digger in an era of no phones or fancy cars He knew that one strike was more than enough for his dream A simple scheme A god-fearing man of the Methodist clan That was Morgan A god-fearing man who gave not a damn But his poor wife, she was mourning

LORE OF THE LAND They first sent Cookie in a ship Bligh and Phillip had a dip Thus began the old land's trip Far from its primal state First they were, at first sat back Tried to bargain, tried attack Thus began the old land's sack The forests and the plains Would never be the same It's the law of the land, you cannot hope to save Your old lore of the land , it’s the white law to the grave First the rivers then the beach Poisons oozing toxins leech Forests dying, out of reach The old land will fight back First they were, last they'll be When land is darkened, they’ll still see Dream and wait 'til land is free The land will take them back Their land will have them back It's the lore of the land, you cannot run away It's the lore of the land, and she has the final say It's the lore of the land, you cannot run away It's the lore of the land, and the users, are sure to pay It's the lore of the land, you cannot run away It's the lore of the land, it will always rule the day It's the lore of the land, you cannot run away It's the lore of the land, she has the final say

Curiosity 03:50

Heroine 04:31
HEROINE This is a novel way to start a story 'Bout a laid-back lady who gained her glory She never was wasted, she never was spiked She always tasted and knew what she liked She was the heroine, she always stayed calm Purest heroine, gave me a shot in the arm The heroine, who could fix anything Lovely heroine, she always rushed in Where angels and saints fear to tread All men have to face her with dread The spear is the key to her art: To pierce the stoutest man's heart She's the heroine, she stays on the tracks Hero's heroine, she repels all attacks The heroine, who is never asleep Magic heroine, she can stealthily creep Into dreams or to moments more real A lover who lives by her feel She works with a needle and thread For sewing the souls of the dead She's the heroine, who denies all distress Perfect heroine, she's the ideal mistress Fearless heroine, both rider and horse Oh heroine, inexhaustible source My heroine, wondrous heroine Ah, heroine, my heroine Heroine, purer than snow My heroine, I go where you go Heroine, gentle and slow Heroine, I know yes I know Heroine, purer than snow My heroine, I go where you go Heroine, heroine, heroine, hero-ine Heroine, heroine, heroine, hero-ine

about

Once again embracing the traditional limitation of what will fit on a CD, this was a difficult set of choices and many songs were regretfully overlooked. I have to admit to passing over some songs that I really think are good ones, because I don't think I sang them well enough - particularly from the first two albums. Overall though, this is a more eclectic group of songs than Volume 1, ranging across the full Kellaway stylistic territory.
