A relatively old song by the time it was recorded, this one tapped into the awesome hypocrisy and cant that typified the career of the truth-bending master, Johnnie Howard. But there is also the broader experience of listening to someone who you simply know - for reasons you can’t quite put your finger on – is not telling the truth. When you get this feeling, you are hardly ever proved to be wrong; it’s one of those instincts we must have preserved from primordial times, but which we have perhaps learned to mistrust through the process of science dominating our evidential world.
lyrics
DON’T BELIEVE
Listening to a story that’s told
The hero-narrator’s uncommonly bold
This doesn’t sound like the person you know
All of the details, blow by blow
Events rise to a peak
His face is far too meek
And you don’t believe a word
Of all the things you’ve heard
This one takes the special cake
It all seems absurd
You don’t believe a word
Not even a third
Truth is stretched to breaking point
What a nerve
The good politician stares at the lens
Straight is a word he works and he bends
An offer he’s made will help everyone
The outcome is sure, he’s done all the sums
Sincere, the eyebrows rise
A mask to hide those lies
But you don’t believe a word
Of all the things you’ve heard
This one takes the special cake
It all seems absurd
You don’t believe a word
Not even a third
Truth is stretched to breaking point
What a nerve
No, you don’t believe a word, you don’t believe a word
You don’t believe a word, you don’t believe a word
No, you don’t believe a word, you don’t believe a word
No, you don’t believe a word, you don’t believe a word
No, you don’t believe a word, you don’t believe a word
