The Royal in Loch - one of South Gippsland's old stately pubs and a memorable gig by the inimitable Cool and The Cucumbers. Caught sans bass player, an emergency call went out to Back Pocket's resident play-anything man and voila, Ken arrived with minutes to spare to complete the rhythm section. The accordion didn't last the night, but hey, Cucmbers just roll on. They are, after all, vintage stock. Pre-gig, during the breaks and in the post-haze, the Royal's balcony served all well.
lyrics
CUCUMBER SALAD DAYS
Heading out east, just an hour and a half
Going back down a familiar old path
Cool and The Cucumbers, minus a bass
Bat all alone will be setting the pace
Lucky to play in a venue so neat
A man from Neilson appears on the beat, on the beat
And the band kicks tight
It’s a Gippsland night
At the Royal in Loch – it’s vintage stock
Up on the balcony some reminisce
Thinking back now on that big string of hits
Cucumber madness gripping the floor
A gender imbalance we choose to ignore
Engine room harnessed like Ken never left
Kim pulls out strapless, a vanishing set, so deft
But the band plays on
To the chook yard throng
At the Royal in Loch – it’s vintage stock
Memories warm, after the storm
Time heals, we realign, all start in time
And the band plays on
And the bond is strong
At the Royal in Loch –let it rock
And the band kicks tight
It’s a Gippsland night
At the Royal in Loch – it’s vintage stock
And the band plays on, and the band plays on
And the band plays on, and the band plays on
And the band plays on, and the band plays on
And on, and on, and on….
