The child is never far from the surface, particularly in men. Forget who said it, but have always been struck by the idea that the human being peaks at birth and the rest is all downhill, as all that is innocent and natural gets drummed out. Loss and the looming mortality (reminders of which become more frequent with age); the realisation that life's achievements don't mean much to 99% of the rest of the world: and around we go again to repeat the lesson.
lyrics
NEVER AN ADULT
Tell me how do you feel when there's no-one near
To hear your tale at the end of the day
It's a hollow kind of feeling
And how do you feel when your childhood dreams
Are torn to pieces in every which way
It sends your mind a-reeling
And how do you feel when you face the fact
She won't be back, the end is the worst
A love that once had sparkled
And how do you feel when deep brown eyes
Show no surprise, you thought you'd be first
Instead you wind up startled
And you cry-y, cry-y, you cry without a sound
You cry-y, cry-y, like a baby so helpless and down
A-ll the way down
You cry-y, cry-y, you cry in selfish grief
You cry-y, cry-y, you cry for lost belief
Cr-y, just for relief
And how do you feel with an old friend gone
You must go on, you thought you'd first
And you think of your achievements
And how do you feel, looking back -
The total lack, with time now the curse
You are your own impedance
You cry-y, cry-y, you cry without a tear
You cry-y, cry-y, like a baby your focus is near
Your focus on death and on fear
You die-ie, die-ie, you die without a sound
You die-ie, die-ie, and one more time, you go around
Like a baby, at last you go down
From a baby it's all the way down
