In university days, always found the health conscious, clean-living, lively, vivacious young woman somehow threatening. “If you must smoke, always at least have something to eat in the morning before your first cigarette.” This seemed absurd advice to someone who idolised Jim Morrison and Gerry Garcia, but it also planted this seed of knowledge that they really were clever and you were just plain stupid. Many years later, meeting these still lively vivacious older women proved the truth of that suspicion. One of these well-kept all-knowing older women happened to be a German called Eva; so annoyingly right.

EVER-CLEVER (WONDER GIRL)
She’s a wonder girl
Who could wrap any man around her finger
She’s a wonder girl
Just a look, but now somehow it lingers
And I called her Eva Clever
I called her ever-clever
I thought I knew her better
She’s a wonder girl

And I called her Eva Clever
I called her ever-clever
I thought I knew her better

And I called her Eva Clever
Yes, she was ever-clever
And I, it seems, was never
