I hadn't heard the expression in years when it was used by a person for whom English is a 2nd language. Fortunately, she told me how this guy took an ill-starred shine to her, whereas she was actually taking a shine to me and I to her. We shone for quite some time, still do in a funny way. The expression captures the quicksilver nature of human attraction, the beam of light reflected many times over. Without the shine, don't even try
