about

Aragorn saw himself as responsible for holding together the realm of men in the coming battles, as did the old Kings of Gondor. He knew that all the valour of those like the men of Rohan would be of little use, if they were swamped from the south by the Haradrim, Corsairs and other forces of men committed to the Dark Lord, gathering like bees to honey.

And only a King would know what to do and how to handle the ride, how to call in the oath and assemble the awesome ghost army. Once loosed, this was an army intent on ridding itself of the oath and they did the rest with frightening efficiency. Indeed, the King had returned. For the first time then, there was some hope of taking a fight to Sauron and not being crushed between two massive forces. Both Aragorn and Gandalf knew though that they were only buying time. If the Ring-bearer failed in the quest, the One ring would ensure Sauron of victory.

lyrics

THE PATHS OF THE DEAD

Aragorn rides, to the sea
They leave in the dawn, but black are the trees
He goes where no one except him would dare
He leads with the courage to counter despair
He rides, and others must follow

The company pass, the Dark Door to a cave
Great fear overcome, by a leader so brave
A terror that great, even dwarves dread to enter
Dead ahead and behind, with them in the centre
A murmur, of ghosts who must follow

So ride, and don't glance back
Ride, just look ahead
Ride, don't fall back
We ride the Paths of the Dead
We ride the Paths of the Dead

From Haunted Paths down, the company's borne
To the Stone of Erech, the oath-breakers sworn
The debt is called in, in this hour of need
The spirits are summoned, and Aragorn leads
And the shadow host grows, as it follows

The Southron in rout, none could stand firm
With the Shadows about, the tide on the turn
Sauron now troubled, the King on the rise
The gnawing of doubt, and the fear of surprise
They ride, resistance is hollow

So ride, and don't glance back
Ride, just look ahead
Ride, don't fall back
We ride the Paths of the Dead
We ride the Paths of the Dead

We ride the Paths of the Dead, we ride the Paths of the Dead
We ride the Paths of the Dead, we ride the Paths of the Dead
We ride the Paths of the Dead
