about

As much as Aragorn and Gandalf had done to put together a decent fighting force, it was paltry by comparison with Sauron’s endless armies of creatures and machines of war. To confront them head on provided the only element left in Gandalf’s bag – surprise. It suggested the big G had some power he thought could withstand the massed assault. Sauron had this shadow of doubt that perhaps Gandalf had seized the One and would try to use it against him (as futile as that would be, it would be tactically different). But, as ever, the G was buying time and successfully distracting the Eye as much as he could.

The honourable army’s ability to only just withstand the first assault out of Mordor did not suggest that G had some new super weapon. But, as ever, the eagles were the harbingers of something. All the believers knew was that Frodo would either make it shortly, or be caught in the process…

Meanwhile, back in Mordor, where Frodo and Sam had been plodding along for quite a while, Mt Doom now was the issue. Frodo did it hard up the slopes and then faced the ultimate irony: without the survival of the frenzied Smeagol, he would not have been able to fulfill the quest; the Ring had to be removed, finger and all. Gandalf’s bluff worked and the job was done right behind Sauron’s back, as he huffed and puffed at the meagre alliance. Eagles wrapped things up.

lyrics

THE FINAL BATTLE

Sauron's angry, his Lord Nazgul fallen
Wants to crush his foes into dust
That wizard poser with his puny forces
He'll deal with him as he must
But one thing gnaws away inside
One thing just isn't right
Where's the ring he's been looking for all these years?

Men and Elves have gathered, few in number
They know their hopes are less than bad
Standing tall, with gaze unflinching
A cause for which they will die glad
Gandalf's face conceals dismay
Aragorn is strong but grey
Where's the ring we've been hiding all these years?

It's the end either way, of good or the Elves
As Elrond keeps saying, we must do for ourselves
The end of an Age, and the world we have known
As Gandalf reminds us, we're out on our own
We're out on our own

The first assault, barely held back
Gandalf's fears are for the worst
Scans the sky for signs of eagles soaring
If there's hope they'll know it first
The Nazgul flee, as the sun gleams red
Eagles diving, on the north wind sped
Suddenly the sky is rent with fire

Frodo standing at the Crack of Doom now
Fights to throw the loathsome thing
Gollum sneaking, a last fling for Precious
Bites the finger and the ring
Falls forever, the world remade
Eagles swooping, the brave pair saved
The battle over as evil just falls short

It's the end of Sauron, and the end of the Elves
As Elrond keeps saying, we must do for ourselves
The end of a battle, the War is not won
As Gandalf reminds us, the road goes ever on
The road goes ever on, the road goes ever on
The road goes ever on, the road goes ever on
