about

As all the events of war took place, the far-seeing Elrond sat watching the end of his third age, remembering events over the 1000s of earth-years that led to this end game with the ancient legacy of Morgoth. And knowing that irrespective of the outcome, it was the end for the immortals, those of the First Age. For Elrond, a loss was disaster, a win was the inevitable ‘loss’ of all his life’s work; a ticket on a boat.

The High Elves had faded to the point of virtual non-participation in the battles, but had been the tactical directors over all the years preparing for Sauron’s attempt to lay hold of the One. The High Elves still had enormous powers, but these had been focused more on defence and intelligence gathering. Much of their power was invested in the rings, but these could not be used openly and never were. Elrond had only the Wizards as potent allies to combat war-like aggression, their skills providing an echo of the might that the Elves had been able to muster in the earlier ages. Otherwise, the Elves depended on the good among those to come, men in particular; hence the importance of Aragorn, if any fight were to be possible.

But in the context of battles in a lifetime, this one was only minor in the Elrond lexicon, even if the consequences could have been dire. He had survived battles of a different power and magnitude. So perhaps, after three long ages, this song is Elrond’s whimsical reflection on Middle Earth and the blink-of-an-eye passage of events that were the last throws of Sauron’s dice. Finally, Elrond signals to Gandalf – it’s time for all to travel down the road to the Havens; the road goes ever on.

lyrics

ELROND'S SONG

Once deep in Frodo's time
There were orcs and Elves sublime
Rangers walked in barrow downs
Ancient Ents in hallowed grounds
And Gandalf weaves, the wisdom magi
Triumph springs from imminent tragedy
The good guys will prevail

Sauron dwelt in Mordor dark
Fashioned beasts not on the Ark
Gollum, trolls, wights and wraiths
He made no match for Frodo's faith
And Gandalf weaves, the wisdom magi
Triumph springs from imminent tragedy
The good guys will prevail

And deep in shade, in deeper wood
The Elves are long misunderstood
Not frail and fey but tall and strong
Striking black and grey and blonde
And Gandalf weaves, the wisdom magi
Triumph springs from imminent tragedy
It’s Gandalf who holds sway
The good guys have their day
Bilbo stokes his pipe
The good guys all get high
And Elrond writes this song
The road goes ever on
