about

This ominous opener tells of a key turning point in the build-up, pre-War of the Ring. The leader of good, Gandalf the Grey, taken down, in battle with an ancient and powerfully evil spirit creature, a Balrog, to the very bowels of the Earth. The Balrog had retreated to those mountains eons ago at the fall of Morgoth and the end of the First Age. It had been unearthed by Durin’s Folk and it made short work of them. It was a force on a par with the Grey.

(From this dark twist in the quest was to later bloom a turnaround - as the Valar made their last play from afar to shape the destiny of Sauron, the evil many-faced servant of Morgoth. The Wizards appeared mysteriously out of the West long ago and were ranked by colour and specialty field. Their powers were gifts - which could also be taken away – from the Valar, but certainly the White Wizard Saruman was the most outwardly powerful. As ever with Tolkien, when all seemed lost, Gandalf the White emerged, empowered by the situation to draw on Red Narya, surer in his role and execution. For all those who had been missing him, this was a deluxe model Gandalf, Saruman was ousted).

lyrics

DURIN'S BANE (BALROG)

If you dig down too deep, you don't know what you'll find
For Durin, the Dwarves still weep, evil deeds of ancient times

They appeared in Middle-Earth, a long, long time ago
Small in stature, big of heart, as Durin's folk were known
Deep in the Misty Mountains, their halls were grand and vast
For mithril were they seeking, for treasures that would last

Down, down, down into the ground
Down, down, down into the ground
Then they heard the awful sound
The Bal-rog, Bal-rog
The Balrog, of Moria

If you delve down too deep, you don't know what you'll gain
A treasure you can keep, or you may loose Durin's Bane

With Elvish skills they blended their mastery of the forge
Swords and armour rendered, the scourge of trolls and orcs
But finally their delving, unleashed an evil great
The Balrog of Thangorodrim, slew the King, and sealed the gate

Down, down, down into the ground
Down, down, down into the ground
Then they heard the awful sound
The Bal-rog, Bal-rog
The Balrog, of Moria

They delved down too deep, loosed a spirit old and fell
As you sow, thus you reap, none would live to tell
